Why Your Hair Color Is Fading Fast (Hint: It's Your Shower Routine)

Dying your hair is no easy feat. Whether you’re going to a salon or doing it yourself at home, you’re spending your hard earned money and precious time to perfect that color. And, for what? For it to fade in two weeks. Oh, hell no! So, why is your hair color fading fast?

You might want to blame your hair stylist, or yourself, but you should be blaming your shower routine. From harsh water minerals to ingredient-loaded shampoos, there are hidden enemies in your bathroom. Let’s take a deeper look at what’s flowing through your shower head and what’s in your shampoo. It’s time to get your hair confidence back!

Hard Water = Color Enemy #1

Hard water is loaded with minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron that cling to your hair shaft, causing dullness, dryness, and yes—major color fade.

Over time, these minerals create a film over your strands, making it harder for moisture and color to penetrate, leading to a brittle, faded look. Plus, hard water can alter the pH balance of your hair, weakening the cuticle and allowing pigment to escape more easily.

How to tell if you have hard water:

  • Your hair feels rough or stiff after washing.
  • Your shampoo doesn’t lather well.
  • Your color fades unusually fast.

The fix:

Install a filtered shower head, like Canopy or Jolie, to block out those minerals and protect your hair from damage before it even starts.

Turn Down the Heat

While we’re on the topic of water, if your bathroom is turning into a sauna—as relaxing as that may be—it’s doing more harm than good. Now, I’m not saying you can’t enjoy a hot shower but if it’s a hair wash day, don’t let that heat touch your hair.

Hot water opens up your hair cuticle, making it easier for that hard earned pigment to just slip right into the drain. Once the cuticle is lifted, it doesn’t just let color out—it also invites in damage from minerals, product buildup, and dryness.

Plus, frequent hot water exposure can lead to increased porosity, which means your hair will lose moisture (and color) even faster over time.

Here’s what to do instead

  • Wash with lukewarm water
  • Rinse your conditioner with cool water to help close the cuticle and lock in shine.

It’s similar to skincare—I’m sure you’ve heard of washing your face with hot water to open up the pores and rinsing it with cold water to seal up the pores. Haircare is skincare.

Let’s Talk Shampoos

Yes, hard and hot water can contribute to your color fading fast but if you can’t install a filtered shower head—invest in a color safe shampoo, at the very least. Traditional shampoos often contain sulfates (like SLS or SLES), which are harsh cleansing agents that strip your hair of natural oils and color molecules.

These surfactants are designed to deep-clean, but on colored hair, that “clean” comes at the cost of hydration and color integrity. And if you’re using shampoo with both sulfates and hard water? Double trouble.

What to avoid in your shampoo and conditioners
❌ Sulfates
❌ Parabens

What to look for instead

✅ A gentle, hydrating, color-safe shampoo like HYDRAGLOW Shampoo
HYDRAGLOW Conditioner to seal in moisture and fight frizz

These two are your dream team for vibrant color and insanely hydrated hair.

Wash Less, Hydrate More.

Don’t be afraid to skip a wash day! I promise you, dry shampoo is your friend. Especially one that is scalp friendly, has zero white cast, and smells ah-mazing. Every single review for our new BOOST X Dry Shampoo has come in at 5-stars—see for yourself.

But in all seriousness, your color fades faster the more you wash. Every shampoo session should add hydration, not take it away. Washing too often strips your scalp of its natural oils and speeds up pigment loss, especially if you're heat styling right after. And don’t forget—dehydrated hair doesn’t just lose color quicker, it also loses that soft, touchable texture.

Color-care hacks:

  • Shampoo 2–3 times a week max.
  • In between, use a dry shampoo
  • Stick to nourishing, sulfate-free products to keep your hair healthy, soft, and fade-resistant.
