Permanent black box dye to red

  • Hiii! I've been thinking about dying my hair red for about a year but I've been scared to take the leap because I have years of permanent black box dye on my hair. With a recent addition of a dark brown permanent dye. Now my hair is a mix of dark brown at my roots with a bit of natural regrowth and black through my mids and ends.
Any advice for how to tackle getting to an even red all over without damaging my hair? Thank you!! ♥️♥️♥️

  • Hi Beautiful! ❤️ First of all, I totally get why you’ve been nervous - years of black box dye is no joke, but it’s still possible to get to a gorgeous, even red. You just have to go slow and be realistic about the process.

Here’s the best approach to keep damage as low as possible:

    - Start with a color remover made for permanent/oxidative dye (black box dye is usually super stubborn). A lot of removers are basically a gentle bleach, so check the label and take it slow.

    - If the black doesn’t budge enough, a gentle bleach wash (bleach + shampoo + low-volume developer) can help lift gradually with less damage than a full bleach session.

    - When lifting black, you’ll usually hit red/orange tones first, which is actually perfect because you don’t need to go blonde to be red. Once you’re at a warm orange base, red will take beautifully.

    - Since your roots are already lighter than your mids/ends, focus on evening out the darker lengths first so you don’t end up with hot roots and dark ends.

Once you’re lifted enough, you can apply a vibrant red shade like Super Red or Super Gloss 5R for that bold, all-over result. Our color also has bond-building benefits to help support your hair after lightening. ❤️‍🔥

If you want the safest plan, do a strand test first (especially on the black mids/ends) so you know how your hair will lift. You’ve got this! 💖
