Can I go from 5G golden brown to 7A ash blonde without killing my hair?

  • Did I make an account just to ask this specific question? Yes, I did.

I recently went from a deep red-violet shade to the 5G golden brown. My original goal was to get closer to my natural color, a dark ash blonde/light brown.

I used color eraser by Matrix (which is basically bleach) and did some damage thinking it wouldnt be as bad as bleach (it is). The first color I tried ended up looking like a warm light brown, almost strawberry blonde but not quite. Anyways, it was an odd shade on me and I hated it.

So I used 5G to cover and repair it, I was going to try 7A but I wasn't sure if my hair was light enough (it probably was).

I liked 5G, it's a beautiful color, but darker than I expected. I damaged my hair lightening it just to get it back to a dark shade again, so that was unfortunate. Now that it's faded a bit, it has a warm copperish tone and it looks like how my red hair would fade out after a few months. Which isn't bad, but I really wanted to get back to a cool toned brown at least.

Long story short - if I fade out the 5G as much as possible, can I try covering what's left with 7A? Or is bleach or color removal inevitable? If I do have to use bleach, is it possible without killing my hair? Or should I just not?

I dyed it about a month ago and I wash my hair 3-4 times a week. Presently at a mid toned, warm copper brown with no attempts to remove color yet.

Thoughts and opinions are welcome :)

  • Hi Beautiful! 💛 First off, props for being so thoughtful and detailed - your hair journey has been a ride and you’ve handled it like a pro!

Since 5G is a warm golden brown, it makes sense that you’re now seeing those coppery tones, especially over previously red-violet hair. Your hair likely absorbed the pigment more deeply due to increased porosity from the color remover.

    Can you use 7A?
Yes, you can! Just keep in mind:

    • 7A (Ash Blonde) can help cool down warmth if your hair is light enough.
    • If there's still strong red pigment left, 7A may not cancel it fully and could look muddy.
    • Always do a strand test first to be safe.

    Steps to Try:

    • Fade the 5G first with clarifying shampoo or a vitamin C treatment.
    • Then try 7A. Apply it to clean, dry hair and monitor how well it neutralizes the warmth.
    • If it’s still too warm, a bleach wash (bleach + 10 or 20 vol + shampoo) can help lift gently.
    • After lifting, apply 7A to tone.

And the best part? Our color contains bond-building ingredients to help support your hair throughout the process 💪

Can’t wait to see your cool-toned transformation! ✨
