Soo... I have some color lying around... Can I still use it?

Should I go and buy a fresh batch (resulting in doing the process later), or proceed with the colors I currently have on hand (resulting in doing the process ASAP)?

  • Hi Hello, XMondo team and community.

I'm back with what may be an answered question regarding the Color Masks. (I say "answered question" because I feel like I know the answer to this, but I want to be sure.)

Months back, I've pitched the idea of coloring my hair with Amythest, Super Blue, and Turquoise (Brad, I remember you suggested Pink! I may humor that in the future, but for now, I'm still riding alongside the cool colors). I had used them only twice and still have a lot left over. They were originally opened back in March of this year (2025), which means according to the packaging, these supposedly expired in September (2025).

What ails me is that there's much left and getting more would run near $75 to $90 for a fresh batch, and while it would be ideal to get a fresh new batch to color the hair with, my wallet isn't looking really up to the task at this time.

What raises this question is the fact that coming soon, I'll be going to hang out with some friends in about a week or so, and I want to try to get my hair back (or at least styled) before I head over. With the time I have left, I can afford to get the bleach and run it through, then follow up with the colors, and then press it out with the Super Gloss Anti Frizz Defense Spray I recently got. This would all be done with an undercut instead of the Bob I've been currently working with.

so I beckon the question. With everything considered: about 7 to 8 days to pull this off, little funds and a bit of hope, some clippers and some tools, and a little bit of bleach; Would it still be possible to use the colors I still have from March? IF SO and proceeded with caution, what are the downsides to applying the colors I have?

I'd love to hear from all sides on this, I'm already nervous, and would be willing to share the outcome after it's done.

Take care, love someone special today, and stay curious! 💫

Much love and Rock on 💜,

    Jadi

  • Update: I looked around the site to see if there was any information to point out how to go about the color and the defense spray, and found nothing in the FAQs.

In theory, I'm suspecting that it would be ideal to put the color on first and then lock it in with the defense spray after. Another possibility I'm looking into for when is if I should do the color first, and then the next time I go to style to proceed with the defense spray. In other words go 3 to 4 days minimum for letting the hair rest without heat, and then going into the styling.

Important note to consider: I am naturally a 4B/4C, meaning once water hits it (without the defense spray to protect it), the hair will recoil. The aim is to get the hair to last longer as straight and flowy as possible with some colors to go with it. The conditioning properties that the Color Masks, understanding the colors go on dry hair, will cause the hair to recoil. Therefore, the anti frizz gloss spray is intended to be a defense against losing the press. It's a tricky thing to juggle, but I'm really aiming for this to land accordingly. I only got one shot at this before the gathering. I'm checking everything to make this really count.
