Coloring Tips?

  • Hi, Brad and team! I'm completely new to at-home coloring, I've only ever been to a salon three times, spaced several years apart, and only got highlights and lowlights all three times. I ran across Xmondo and love what I've seen online, and ordered some products to try!

My question is this. I bought the 5N Dark Brown to do an all-over color deposit to darken my hair (naturally a light brown color with blonde hues/warmth) and a couple of fashion colors: the Purple-Blue shift and Berry. My goal is to have the overall color the dark brown with one or both of the fashion colors like highlights through my hair. I get how I would do it if I were just adding the color to all of my ends or mid to ends, but how do I go about sectioning the colors without the dark brown bleeding onto the fashion colors?

I have fine, straight hair that's just below my midback, if that makes it easier to help figure out how to apply the colors correctly. Thank you for any tips!

  • Hi Beautiful! 💜 Welcome to at-home color - this is going to be SO fun, and your plan is totally doable.

To keep 5N Dark Brown from bleeding onto your fashion highlights (Purple-Blue Shift and/or Berry), the key is clean sectioning and keeping the sections physically separated while they process.

    Here’s the easiest method:

    • Section out the pieces you want for Purple-Blue Shift and/or Berry (money pieces, ribbons, or an underlayer all work great).
    • Apply the fashion colors first, fully saturate, then wrap each section in foil so they’re sealed and protected.
    • Next, apply 5N Dark Brown to the rest of your hair, avoiding the foils.
    • When it’s time to rinse, try to rinse the 5N first (keep the foils closed while you rinse out the brown), then remove the foils and rinse the fashion colors last.

Quick pro tip: those fashion shades will be the most vibrant on lighter pieces, so if your hair is pretty warm/light brown you’ll still get a pretty tint, but lightening those highlight sections will give you that true pop.

You’ve got this 💪💜 Can’t wait to see your dark brown + jewel tone moment!
